THEY WERE NEARLY finished with dinner when the front door of the house opened and a shout came from the hallway: ‘I hope you all have saved some chicken soup for me, you greedy slobs!’

There was no mistaking that voice, and Wolf recognized it immediately. It had the effect of a slap, causing him to sit up in his chair. He could hear suitcases being wheeled along the wooden floors, and a second or two later his brother-inlaw Isaac appeared in front of them at the head of the table, behind where Allen was sitting, followed by his partner Max.

‘Greetings, mi familia!’ Isaac shouted, half singing it. Judy got up and went over and hugged her cousin.

‘It feels like we left Barcelona a week ago!’ Isaac said, ‘and oh my God are we so totally amped for some good kosher wine and gefilte fish or what?’

Isaac stood with his arm around Judy’s waist, looking out over the entire table.

‘Shana Tova, you crowd of ruffians,’ he said. ‘Hey, you actually all look not so unpresentable.’

‘Isaac,’ Avram said from the opposite end of the table, ‘come and say hello properly.’

‘Yes, mein Vater,’ Isaac said, and he began working his way along the side of the table opposite Wolf, greeting everyone individually. His partner Max stayed where he was, Judy beside him.
